Such is the case for the son of Jigawa state's governor Sule Lamido who was apprehended with a whooping sum of money at the Muritala International airport. As ten thousand US dollars ($10,000) was the highest allowed in transit per passenger, Mr Aminu Lamido declared this to the custom agents. However the agents suspecting that it could be more conducted more searches on him only to find an additional Forty thousand US Dollars ($40,000) bringing the total to Fifty thousand US Dollars ($50,000).

Senior special adviser to president Goodluck Jonathan on public affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe had said that the present administration can not be blamed for the country's poor performance in the Transparency International rating. Citing his reasons, he said that the rating was due to decades of endemic corruption by previous administration.

This is in response to the claim by the ACN that presidency is responsible for it. He said such claim "is preposterous and lacking in credibility, and can only be best described as pure political mischief." He continued, cautioning him that he should remove the log in his own eye before attempting to help with others speck saying  “Nigerians are not fools and cannot be fooled for too long that there is endemic corruption within the rank and file of his party. It is an undeniable fact that corruption is a major challenge to the nation and its people, and everyone agrees it is endemic and has been with us for over three decades.

He went further saying “Few days ago we spelt out details of commendable efforts of this administration in fighting corruption and also confirming the demonstrable political will of this administration to take up this onerous  challenge.
Critics of this administration appear to be deliberately undiscerning, confusing incidences of corrupt practices unraveled by this administration and legal steps being taken by the administration as being corrupt practice of the same administration.
Part of this mischief and attempt to bring opprobrium on this administration was the assertion by President of the Campaign for Democracy, CD, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin. She said N5 trillion was stolen under Jonathan, and that “the non-implementation of the Farouk Lawan report as well as the Nuhu Ribadu Presidential Task Force findings has completely killed the fight against corruption in Nigeria.”

The above calls  to question her respect for facts because it is a fact that the Lawan report has been handed over to the EFCC, and there are ongoing prosecution deriving from this, while the President just set up a White Paper committee on the Ribadu report. How do you implement a report without a white Paper?.

Lamorde, seems to be down with corruption headache

We reiterate that the conclusion that N5 trillion was stolen under President’s Jonathan’s watch is gross misinformation and absolute falsehood. Nowhere in the Ribadu was that conclusion reached. It never happened, and it is wholesomely untrue.
“We want to state categorically, for the umpteenth time that it was this administration that exposed the oil subsidy scam, pension scam, and also set up  the Nuhu Ribadu committee to look into the rot in the oil sector.

“We must state that the fight against corruption is not a short boxing bout, but a long fight that will be systemic, strategic and institutional. The role of the judiciary in bringing culprits to justice cannot be underestimated in the war against corruption.

No matter the Federal Government’s commitment , the President has no power to jail any suspect by presidential fiat. Therefore he should not  be made a scape goat for the failure of other arms of government  who fail to judiciously discharge their responsibilities.

It is also not true that lack of funding is stalling the fight as concluded by Chairman, Coalition Against Corruption, Debo Adeniran. We must not forget what the   EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde said recently about how judges and lawyers stall trials of high profile suspects. The two trials of James Ibori in Nigeria and the United Kingdom fully underscore this point.

“The Federal Government, mindful of this judicial stumbling block, has put together a bill to reform the criminal justice system, so that justice will no longer be evaded through sundry abuses of court processes.

BANK SECREETLY LAYS OFF 1000 AGAIN

Members of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, (NUBIFIE) are set to embark on total showdown in the sector to protect their jobs.

President of NUBIFIE, Danjuma Musa who disclosed this during an interview with newsmen yesterday in Ilorin, Kwara state said that over 1,000 members of the union have lost their jobs in just two banks.

The is the second time that Union Bank is doing such within a space of 13 months.
The decision which took the disengaged workers by surprise, was communicated to them at the close of work last Friday.

A source at the Dopemu branch of the Bank in Lagos who spoke to DailyPost on the condition of anonymity said: “It is quite depressing. They fired those of us that are Tellers but some marketers survived the axe. I received the news with great shock. How can they do this to us at this period when the festive season is fast approaching?” she queried.

Asked if any compensation was paid, the disheartened mother of one said: “I got an alert of N75, 000 this morning. I guess others got something in that range. I served them for five years and the best pay back I get is a sack letter two weeks to Christmas”
On her next line of action, the source in a shaky voice said: “What can I do? I will re-write my CV and go back to the labour market. I stay at home for years before I got this job, I just pray there won’t be repeat now that I have to start all over. It’s really sad.”
Information gathered was that Union Bank already has replaced the sacked members of staff with new hands recruited from Phillips Consulting and other outsourcing firms.

Our reporter called the Operations Manager of the Dopemu branch of Union Bank, Mr. T. C. Ogbonna to get his reaction.
 When questioned on the reason for the lay off, Ogbonna said: “My brother, I don’t know oo. I can’t say anything because I really don’t have the details.” Sensing the reporter will not drop the call without a cogent information, the official said “Please I am not in position to speak. You can call the Head of Human Resources or Corporate Communications.”

Another insider who confided in DailyPost said, Mr. Ogbonna may not likely give reasons so as to save his job. He is the current branch secretary of the Bank’s labour union.

October 1 2010 Bomb Blast Setup and Government Double Standard

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I hope this letter meets you well. The reasons I choose to direct this letter to you are that I am a Catholic and you are an old boy of my alma mater, St. Gregory’s College, Lagos.

I write from Kuje Prison Abuja where two other Catholics and I have been languishing in solitary confinement for 2 years on trumped-up charges relating to the October 1, 2010 bomb attack claimed by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

My name is Charles Tonbra Okah, aka Billy Bones. On October 16, 2010 my residence in Apapa GRA was invaded by operatives of the State Security Services on the warrant that I was the suspected spokesman for MEND using the pseudonym “Jomo Gbomo.” My eldest son, visiting from the United States where he attends the University of Kansas (KU) was also arrested.

At the SSS Headquarters Abuja where we were flown to blindfolded with our legs and hands bound, my ‘cooperation’ was solicited for something completely different to my surprise. My captors threw me a lifeline; offering me our freedom and a lucrative contract in exchange for false testimony against my younger brother Henry, who is resident in South Africa. I was to write a false statement claiming to have been told by Henry about the bomb plot and naming the following persons as his conspirators: Former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Mallam Nasir El Rufai, Chief Timipre Sylva, and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan. I bluntly refused.

To maintain pressure on me, I was told that my son would be implicated in the bomb matter, my containers of legitimate imports then at the Tin Can Port would be impounded and my business destroyed. I still did not budge, tossing their lifeline back with royal disdain.

When they realized I was not going to connive in their scheme, they became formal and reverted to the main reason for my arrest. I was asked for the MEND password which I told them I did not know. They bound me in a chair, took off my trousers and clamped a device to my penis. My legs were then put inside a basin of water. The device when turned on passed a high voltage of electricity to my body and I lost consciousness. This was on Monday October 18 at about 6pm. When I regained consciousness, I discovered I was at the National Hospital emergency room. I remember the doctors asking why I had trauma marks on my chest where the SSS doctor performed Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The SSS operatives were evasive in answering questions at the hospital. That night I was released and taken to rest for the night at the State House Clinic. That was the last time a torture was carried out on me.

My son was eventually released after Mr. Femi Falana visited in the company of my wife after a month of being denied access to a lawyer. However, my containers have been impounded up to date and my bank account frozen.

The SSS stopped asking about the MEND password after Jomo Gbomo made another statement while I was in their custody but refused to still let me go because I did not cooperate earlier with them. Meanwhile in the ongoing trial in South Africa, Henry is accused of being the same Jomo Gbomo by the same people who say I am JG.

Double Standard in Kuje Prison:

On December 24, 2010 we were remanded in Kuje prison as a result of our application to be removed from the SSS detention cell. Unknown to us, the SSS passed instructions from “above” to the prison authorities to carry out “special treatment” in order to stampede us into a trial towards conviction. For 2 years we have been locked up in solitary confinement, are not allowed to exercise or get sunlight outside and are forced to sleep on the floor when bunk beds are available. Even a court order by Justice Gabriel Kolawole to the prison for a change in our confinement style was ignored after it was superseded by an ‘order from above.”

In late 2011, while locked up inside our cell block, prison officials clothed in protective apparel, face masks and gloves carried out fumigation without opening us to wait outside. Our protests fell on deaf ears and by the time they were finished we were in distress. The Youth Corper doctor on call tried her best within her limits to the emergency she was confronted with. The poisonous gas and barbaric action reminiscent of the Nazi concentration camp infamous gas chambers, eventually led to the death of one Francis Osuwo, aka Gboko, also roped into this case by the SSS and a man I have never met before. Interestingly, the four persons in detention were strangers to each other except for one Obi Nwabueze who is a family friend and close associate of Henry.

The fumigant whose chemical constituent were never relayed to us have affected my neurological system and I have been on a daily prescription of strong neurological medication prescribed by a neurologist of the National Hospital, Professor Bwala.

While the Boko Haram suspects at Kuje prison are allowed to worship in the prison mosque, we have never set foot in the prison chapel. They are also enjoying privileges such as cable television, radio, liberty to move within the prison walls, bunk beds to sleep on and phone calls to their families. We are denied all of the above.

When I asked the current Controller of FCT Command the reason for the disparity, he said “the fear of Boko Haram is the beginning of wisdom.” He further said the Moslem community was concerned about their welfare in custody.

Double Standard in the Court:

Even in the Courts where justice is supposed to be blind, the double standard is glaring. While Senator Ndume, accused of being a financier to Boko Haram was given bail by the same Judge presiding over our case, we have been denied bail.

I understand that this Senator was permitted by the same court to travel on his religious obligation to Mecca for the lesser Hajj while we are refused from attending mass in a chapel less than 50 meters from our cell block.

The court is willing to permit the Senator approval to travel abroad for his medical check if he can provide proof that such check up is not done locally. Meanwhile, I have been denied my application to go on a compulsory checkup which in my case is mandatory for a kidney donor, having donated my left kidney to my mother 30 years ago.

Our cases have been adjourned repeatedly for cruelly long durations. The last time I appeared in court was March 2012 and the next adjourned date is January 31. 2013, that is if that date will not be shifted again under a flimsy excuse.

All we ask is for a free and fair justice from an independent Judiciary that should release us instead of holding us as scapegoats over an obvious power show. While this government continues holding us hostage, our families are becoming destitute.

Our rights to freely worship as Catholics is being infringed by the state who have more respect for Islam when all religions should be treated equally.

Double Standards in the Polity:

The National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd.) was quoted as saying that the government of President Goodluck Jonathan has the phone numbers of suspected Boko Haram sponsors. Later the Inspector General of Police said certain individuals had been put on a “watch list” as suspected Boko Haram sponsors.

Now the big question is why did the government not simply have our phone numbers and put us also on its ‘watch list” while we move about freely? They did not hesitate to arrest us, clamp us on trumped-up charges and detain us on flimsy excuses. They did not merely talk, they took action even in South Africa where my brother was arrested since 2010. Is there a better word to describe this other than hypocrisy?

The same government eager to negotiate with Boko Haram who claimed responsibility for over 100 attacks where Catholics have suffered the brunt, have refused to negotiate with MEND and continue to delude themselves that all is well.

Why would this government expect Boko Haram to unmask it leaders and negotiate when they can see that perceived leaders and supporters of MEND are being persecuted and jailed?

I welcome a fact-finding visit from the Church in the company of credible Human Rights groups to verify our allegations.

On the two occasions Kuje Prison was visited by the Bishop of Abuja during the Christmas of 2010 and 2011, he was surreptitiously steered away from where were we are held hostage and I believe he has no idea of what is going in inside Kuje prison.

Our prayers is that leaders of our Churches will be more sensitive and proactive in politics of the land that touches the lifes of their followers and not leave delicate issues solely in the hands of corrupt and selfish politicians, and majority of the population rid of a “Potiphar” mentality who believe lies when told by SSS.

Details on how Finace Minister's 82 Years Mum was Kidnapped!

The  82 years old mother of  Nigeria's minister of Finance and former World bank Managing Director Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjwo Iweala has been kidnapped.

Reports says she was Kidnapped in the Palace of her husband the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-uku,  Obi (Prof.) Chukwuka Okonjo.  Mrs. Kanene Okonjo  was  abducted around 1:47pm on Sunday  by a gang of armed men who seized her at the gate of the palace at Ogbe-ofu and took her away while  the husband had traveled out of town.

The state Police command had made an arrest of a man who had earlier been to take the queen to a place in the town.

A source within the palace said , “The abductors were heavily armed. They were about 10. They bailed up the men fixing the interlocking tiles and asked them to lie face down".

“Immediately they saw her (the King’s wife) they bundled her into a waiting Golf car while another car was parked outside.”

It was learnt that one of them went upstairs to collect the woman’s handbag. The eyewitness said another maid, who sighted the kidnappers upstairs, hid herself in the kitchen.

 As at the time of filing this report the kidnappers were yet to contact the family of the Finance's Minister though a family source said she is already working with security officials in Abuja on how her mother could be freed.

Ngozi Iweala’s mother , Prof. Kamene Okonjo is a medical doctor who is married to a popular monarch (traditional ruler), Professor Chukwuka Aninshi Okonjo Agbogidi in Ogwashi-Uku kingdom. She is 82-year-old and the husband of is Obi Chukwuka Okonjo, a retired professor of Economics and the present  traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku.

 Adequate security of the entire nation might have prevented such occurrences. Our leaders should ask themselves a question. Who is next in line?

OYEDEPO DENIES TAKING CHURCH MONEY IN TWENTY FIVE YEARS

Bishop Oyedepo has deny the claim by those accusing him of ripping off church members through tithes and offering to live in affluence while cruising in private jets.

He said,"The last time Church paid my salary was December 1987, nobody heard it, not even the Ministers in the church until 1997 and church members didn't hear this until 2007".

Again he said "In January of 1988 my wife asked me of money for feeding and I told her I had give my salary to God, and that was the last time she ever had to ask for feeding till date"

He aagin queried whether anybody has ever been approached by him for any form of financial assistance? Again he shocked the people accusing him and church of using poor people's money to build universities that themselves can't afford to send their kid when he said;

"Covenant university was built within 7 months without any collection of any one naira tithes and offerings or donation of any kind from anywhere"
