Funny: Goverment official advices Santa Claus on tax payment
A man dressed Father Frost, the regional version of Santa Claus, pose for a picture in Independence Square in Kiev December 30, 2008. |
Funny? Isn't it. Santa Claus may have to start paying tax in Ukraine. Ukraine on Wednesday reminded entertainers making money by posing as Did Moroz - the local version of Santa Claus - and his helpers to pay income tax.
While studying internet advertisements, the state tax service found out that a Did Moroz with a traditional female Snihuronka (Snow Maid) helper would earn 250 to 3,500 hryvnias ($30 to $440) per hour in capital Kiev this season.
"Such citizens will need to file forms and pay taxes," the tax service said in a statement.
The service said it
was barred from conducting tax checks on small businesses but urged
ordinary Ukrainians to report tax-dodging Santas.

Sistema Estatal DIF Puebla, the Mexican government office in charge of family welfare, and job training organization CiNiA, joined forces this week to light the most lanterns simultaneously in a single venue in Puebla City, Mexico.
1,520 lanterns were lit within one minute for the first round, which were the lanterns that counted toward the record.
In all, approximately 16,000 lanterns were released into the sky by 3,000 people over the course of the hour and a half-long event.
The record was attempted to bring attention to the work that Sistema Estatal DIF Puebla and CiNiA do, and to bring awareness to the challenges faced by people with disabilities.
The 16,000 lanterns were made over the course of nine months by people with disabilities working with CiNiA.
